Irma Sofia Poeter’s exhibition at SD Mesa College Gallery struck three cords. 1. These fashions from the rear view are as important as the front view. This drives home the idea of dress as sculpture. 2. Seeing the designs (even in photographs) on real people bring them to life in a way that define a different point of view. 3. Looking closely at each work, means seeing the amazing details of works creating new and upcycling old fabrics in completely different ways.
Clothes can be worn as body armor, self-expression, beautification, or even political statements. Poeter’s constructions are all of these and together they define a cultural that she has created out of her life experiences. They define her as much as a self-portrait.
There are then works that are not to be worn and are purely soft sculptures. The rows of stuffed shirts, stuffed animals and the wall of baby dresses, are living next to wall tapestries. She truly embodies an artist who lifts the act of sewing into fine art. We are proud to say she is a 2016 SD Art Prize recipient.
