San Diego Art Prize full press release

SD Art Prize curator, Chi Essary in booth #517 talking about the art prize, the artists and San Diego Visual Arts Network along with a devoted group of volunteers for which we are very grateful. 

There was an immense turn out for the first night of Art San Diego and SDVAN was proud to display a sampling of work of the 2022 SD Art Prize recipients. The larger showing of their work begins on Sat. Sept 17 at the Central Library Art Gallery. 

On view at Art San Diego are two works by Alida Cervantes which are her own personal interpretation of colonial portraits now made partly abstract and one almost washed away but in a lovely pink.

The magnificent woven tapestry by Carlos Castro Arias is drawing immense attention with the figure of Greta Thunberg, the young climate activist, cast in the role of Joan of Arc facing off the melting glaciers and watching the devil boil up some controversial politicians.

Cog-nate Collective (Misael Diaz and Amy Sanchez Arteaga) present a group of postcards or grocery staples. Each one is priced the same as the item it illustrates. All money raised will go to the food bank. As Ellen Speert (one our volunteers) commented, “…they brought useful activism as well as increasing mindfulness of migrant hunger.”  

Angelica Escoto is showing three photos of dogs cavorting on the beach. She recounts how dogs always seem to appear when she is researching her whales projects in to a variety of locations. They have becomes almost a talisman to her.
